Spring Cleaning Tips for a Sparkling Home

After a Manchester winter, homes take a beating. Months of closed windows, damp coats, central heating and wet shoes leave behind a layer of dust, condensation marks and general grime that routine weekly cleaning never quite reaches. Spring cleaning is your chance to reset.

The mistake most people make is starting enthusiastically in one room, running out of steam, and leaving the rest half-done. A clear order of work solves that.

Work top to bottom, back to front

Gravity does half the job for you. Start at ceiling level — light fittings, cornices, the tops of wardrobes and door frames — then work down to surfaces, then skirting boards, then floors. If you vacuum first and dust afterwards, you will simply be vacuuming again.

Within each room, start at the point furthest from the door and work back towards it. You will not walk dust back across areas you have already finished.

Declutter before you clean, not while you clean

Cleaning around objects takes far longer than cleaning a clear surface. Do a full decluttering pass through the house first — one bag for rubbish, one for donations, one box for things that live in another room. Only then start cleaning.

The jobs almost everyone forgets

• Behind and underneath white goods — the fridge, washing machine and cooker collect dust and spills that never get seen
• Extractor fan filters in the kitchen and bathroom, which clog with grease and dramatically lose efficiency
• The rubber seal around the washing machine door, a common source of musty smells
• Window tracks and trickle vents, which fill with grit and block airflow
• Radiator fins — dust trapped inside reduces heat output through the whole winter
• Mattresses, which accumulate dust mites and skin cells regardless of how often you change the sheets
• Light switches, door handles and remote controls, among the highest-touch surfaces in any home

Tackle condensation and damp early

Manchester's climate means condensation is a genuine issue, particularly in older terraces and converted flats with limited ventilation. Check window reveals, the corners of external walls and behind wardrobes on outside walls for black mould spotting.

Treat it as soon as you find it, and address the cause as well as the symptom — improve ventilation, keep furniture slightly away from cold external walls, and use extractor fans while cooking and showering rather than after.

Match the product to the surface

This is where spring cleaning goes wrong most expensively. Acidic cleaners such as limescale removers will etch natural stone and marble. Bleach-based products can discolour grout and damage sealed wood. Abrasive creams will scratch composite worktops and induction hobs.

When in doubt, a pH-neutral cleaner and a microfibre cloth will handle most surfaces safely. Test anything stronger in an inconspicuous corner first.

Know what is worth outsourcing

Some spring cleaning jobs genuinely benefit from professional equipment. Carpets and upholstery need hot water extraction to lift embedded soil — domestic machines rarely generate enough heat or suction to do more than wet the fibres. Ovens need dismantling and specialist degreasers to properly clear carbonised deposits.
