What Will a Cleaner Do in 3 Hours?

Three hours is the most commonly booked slot and the most commonly misjudged. Here is what it realistically covers, and how to get the most from it.
Three hours is the slot most people book first, and the one most often misjudged in both directions. Some expect a whole house returned to showroom condition. Others assume it is barely worth booking. The truth sits in between, and it depends almost entirely on whether the time is directed or left to chance.
What three hours covers in a maintained home
In a two-bedroom flat or small terrace that is already cleaned regularly, three hours is generally enough for a full maintenance clean:
- Kitchen: worktops, hob, sink, exterior of appliances and units, floor washed
- Bathroom: bath, shower, screen, toilet, basin, tiles, mirror, floor
- Bedrooms: dusted, surfaces cleared and wiped, beds changed if linen is left out, floors vacuumed
- Living areas: dusted, upholstery vacuumed, floors done
- Hallway, stairs and landing vacuumed
- Bins emptied and rubbish taken out
That is a genuine whole-property clean, and in a home on a regular schedule it is comfortably achievable.
What changes the maths
Three things eat the time faster than floor area does. Clutter is the biggest one. A cleaner who has to clear a surface before cleaning it is doing two jobs, and tidying is much slower than cleaning. Second is build-up: a bathroom that has not been done in two months is not twice the work of one done fortnightly, it is considerably more, because limescale and soap scum need dwell time rather than effort. Third is the number of rooms, particularly bathrooms, which are the slowest rooms per square metre in any house.
A cluttered four-bedroom house with two bathrooms and a long-overdue kitchen will not be finished in three hours by anyone. Booking it as though it will be produces a half-done job and a disappointing first impression on both sides.
Direct the time, do not leave it open
The single biggest improvement you can make to a three-hour booking costs nothing: say what matters most. Left without direction, a cleaner works to a standard order and may spend forty minutes on a room you did not care about while the one that bothers you gets the last ten.
Give a short priority order. Kitchen and bathrooms first, then bedrooms, then living space is the most common and usually the right one, because those are the rooms where cleanliness is functional rather than cosmetic. If you have guests arriving, the order changes completely.
Twenty minutes of prep buys an hour of cleaning
Clearing surfaces before the cleaner arrives is the highest-return thing you can do. Worktops cleared, floors free of toys and laundry, bath and shower emptied of bottles. None of that is cleaning, all of it is time that would otherwise come out of your three hours.
- Clear kitchen worktops and the draining board
- Pick up anything on the floors, including under the dining table
- Take bottles and razors out of the bath and shower
- Strip beds if you want linen changed and leave fresh sets out
- Put away anything you would rather was not moved or handled
When three hours is the wrong booking
Three hours is a maintenance figure. It is not the right unit for a first clean of a neglected property, a deep clean, an end of tenancy, or anything after building work. Those are scope-based jobs and should be quoted as a whole rather than by the hour, because the work finishes when the property reaches a standard rather than when a clock runs out.
A common and sensible pattern is a longer one-off clean to establish a baseline, then regular three-hour visits to hold it. Once a home is on a schedule, each visit gets quicker, which is why regular cleaning costs less per visit than one-off work.
Do you need to be there?
No, and most of our Manchester customers are not. What matters is access and clear instructions. If you will be out, leaving a short written note of priorities works better than a conversation you had three weeks ago, particularly for anything with a specific requirement like a surface that must not be cleaned with a particular product.
We assign the same cleaner to the same home wherever possible, which removes most of this after the first few visits. They learn the property, the priorities and the order that works, and the same three hours starts going further. Tell us what you need on the phone and we will tell you honestly whether three hours covers it.
